Gentle facial cleansing - Cleanse skin, protect microbiome
April 28, 2026
Proper facial cleansing is the foundation for healthy, radiant skin. It determines how well your skin can regenerate and absorb active ingredients – and whether your skin microbiome remains balanced.
But how do you cleanse your face properly? And which products are really effective? Daniele Büehler, farfalla natural cosmetics expert and beautician, provides practical tips for your cleansing routine – for dry, sensitive skin, acne-prone skin, as well as for your anti-aging facial care.
How do I cleanse my face properly?
"The most important skincare step is cleansing," Daniele knows from her practical experience. "This insight is not new, but with the double cleansing method, you can truly revolutionize your personal cleansing ritual."
The skin should be cleansed morning and evening with a mild, pH- and microbiome-friendly cleanser – with mild surfactants, as used in natural cosmetics. In the evening, a double cleanse is also recommended to thoroughly remove makeup, sebum, and dirt.
Why is facial cleansing important in the morning?
Did you know that a lot accumulates on the skin overnight that requires cleansing? "Our skin is very active at night. It regenerates, detoxifies, recovers from the stresses of the day – all of which leaves traces," explains Daniele. "Therefore, the skin should be cleansed every morning to remove sebum, sweat, and metabolic residues – and thus optimally prepare the skin for care."
For morning cleansing, depending on skin type, the following are suitable:
- Grapefruit Soft Cleansing Foam – gentle & mild cleanser with organic grapefruit for uncomplicated skin, impure and combination skin
- Ultrasens Cleansing Milk – ultra-gentle, re-fattening, ideal for sensitive, dry and mature skin
Both formulations protect the skin flora due to their prebiotic ingredients and are particularly well tolerated.
Why is thorough facial cleansing in the evening just as important?
In the evening, the skin is even more stressed: makeup, UV filters, environmental particles, sebum, and bacteria accumulate on the skin throughout the day. UV filters, in particular, impair the skin's nocturnal regeneration processes. "That's why it's all the more important to cleanse the skin in the evening – preferably with a double cleanse," says Daniele. "Otherwise, even the best anti-aging active ingredients won't do anything!"
What is double cleansing – and why is it useful?
"Double cleansing is a method in which the skin is cleansed in two steps," explains Daniele. "With double cleansing, we first remove makeup and the dirt of the day, and in the second step, we thoroughly cleanse the skin."
It works with different products, depending on the skin condition. From her experience, she reports: "For my daughter, double cleansing (with cleansing milk and cleansing foam) led to a significant improvement in her acne."
So, everyone can perform a double cleanse with their personal favourite products, depending on their skin needs. "I recommend first performing a cleansing massage with a mild cleansing milk and rinsing the product off with water. Afterwards, I recommend a gentle cleansing massage with the second cleansing product, such as the Grapefruit Soft Cleansing Foam. Both cleansing products complement each other perfectly. For dry, sensitive skin, I recommend cleansing both times with the mild Ultrasens Cleansing Milk."
Why is mild cleansing important for the skin microbiome?
The skin has its own microbiome – a community of microorganisms that protects and stabilizes it. If the skin is cleansed too aggressively, this balance can be disrupted. Both the surfactants used and the other ingredients in the formulation are crucial, as is a skin-friendly pH value. This lies in the slightly acidic range and helps to maintain the skin's natural acid mantle.
The Cleansing Prebio line therefore focuses on:
- particularly mild formulations with gentle surfactants and moisturizing ingredients such as plant water, squalane and grapefruit oil or extract
- prebiotic active ingredients to support the skin flora
- a skin-friendly pH value in the slightly acidic range
- 100% natural ingredients (Natrue certified)
This way, the skin is cleansed without compromising its natural protective function.
Why does the skin need a tonic?
A tonic is an important step after cleansing. "Tonic means strengthening or invigorating. It brings the skin back into balance," explains Daniele. "I always advocate for the use of a tonic or alternatively an organic plant water."
The Hyaluron Facial Tonic Grapefruit is a moisturizing facial tonic with organic melissa water, prebiotics and grapefruit extract. It
- clarifies the skin after cleansing
- removes residual impurities
- supports the natural pH value
- protects the hydrolipidic film
- provides moisture
- gives dull skin a fresh radiance.
Application: Spray onto cleansed facial skin and pat in, or spray onto a cotton pad and gently wipe over the face.
How often should you exfoliate?
An exfoliant helps remove dead skin cells and refines the complexion. "Depending on skin type, the skin can be exfoliated twice a week," says Daniele. "For inflammatory skin conditions, I advise against exfoliation. For severe acne-prone skin, I would instead use the Skinclear Sebum Control Mineral Mask twice a week."
Recommendation:
- sensitive skin: 1× per week
- normal to impure skin: up to 2× per week
The Soft Facial Peeling Grapefruit with gentle bamboo exfoliating particles is particularly mild and supports the skin flora with prebiotics.
Facial cleansing briefly explained
- cleanse morning and evening
- double cleanse in the evening with appropriate products
- use mild, microbiome-friendly products
- apply tonic or organic plant water after cleansing
- use a gentle exfoliant 1–2 times a week
Conclusion
Proper facial cleansing is the key to healthy skin. It ensures that the skin remains clean, balanced, and receptive to skincare products.
Or as the beautician emphasizes: "Cleansing is and remains the most important skincare step – but of course only if the products are selected accordingly carefully."
