Packaging is indispensable – it protects valuable products from light, air, and contamination, thus preserving their quality. At the same time, it conveys important information about ingredients, application, and origin.
But at farfalla, we ask ourselves the same question for every product: How can we design the packaging to be as sustainable and resource-efficient as possible?
Our packaging philosophy: avoid – reduce – recycle
Sustainability for us doesn't end at the bottle's rim. In our design and choice of materials, we consistently follow the principle of avoiding, reducing, and recycling waste – for a more circular economy and less environmental impact.
1. Avoid packaging
Wherever possible and practical, we completely avoid outer packaging. Over half of our product range is offered in glass bottles without additional cardboard packaging.
2. Reduce packaging
We rely on refill systems and refill formats for shower gels, shampoos, room sprays, oils, and soaps (500ml – 1000ml), as well as empty containers for those who want to mix or refill their own products. Our production process also adheres to this principle: we use up leftover stock whenever possible to avoid waste.
3. Recycle packaging
Where it makes sense, we replace plastic with plastic-free alternatives. Our packaging consists of recycled and recyclable materials with a high proportion of recycled plastic.

We avoid multi-component packaging and bioplastics and only use single-material products such as glass, PE, PP and PET – for easy reintegration into existing recycling loops.

Glass – durable, elegant and recyclable
A large part of our Aromacare range is bottled in amber glass bottles containing 30-50% recycled material. These bottles are refillable and available as empties, making them a sustainable alternative. Glass is not only high-quality but also easy to recycle and allows for complete emptying of the product.
Plastic – functional and resource-saving
For products used in wet areas or for larger containers over 500 ml, plastic is often the more sustainable choice – lighter and shatterproof. Our bottles are made from 100% recycled PET, and our tubes from food-grade material with 50% recycled content. All packaging is made from single-material components, easy to reuse, and fully recyclable.
With and without outer packaging: as much as necessary, as little as possible.
- No outer packaging: Over 50% of our product range has no cardboard packaging.
- For glass bottles, we use multilayer labels when there isn't enough space for legal declarations – this way our products remain legally compliant, but with minimal packaging.
- With outer packaging: In facial care products, we use cardboard packaging made with 85% recycled cardboard where necessary, for example for small container sizes (10–30 ml). This reliably protects delicate and small glass containers.
Refill & recycling: circular economy in practice
Since there is no comprehensive plastic recycling system in Switzerland yet, we offer the "bring it back" service in all farfalla stores: Customers can return their farfalla packaging, which we recycle 100%.
Our refill formats also encourage the reuse of existing bottles – a simple step towards zero waste and a circular economy.
