Boswellia carterii / Boswellia serrata
The frankincense tree, botanically known as "Boswellia serrata," originates from India and belongs to the balsam family (Burseraceae). The frankincense tree grows in hot, dry desert regions. To extract the resin, the tree bark is scratched to allow the resin to escape. The frankincense oil is then extracted by steam distillation of the resin.
Frankincense oil in aromatherapy
Aromatherapy values the grounding, calming properties of frankincense oil for issues such as exhaustion, stress, tension, and depression. The use of frankincense can also assist with meditation and purify the atmosphere of a room.
The physical effects of frankincense oil
As an ingredient in liniments and baths, frankincense oil is mentioned in specialist literature for its pain-relieving, anti-inflammatory properties for rheumatic conditions, as well as for wounds and bronchitis. The skin-regenerating properties of frankincense oil are particularly valued for ageless, beautiful skin.
